3 Months as a Home Service Company Intern: Home Care Secrets That Boosted My Quality of Life by 300%
2025-02-15   read:43

Introduction

I have to share an absolutely amazing experience with everyone! Last summer, I interned at a high-end home service company for three months, learning from several master-level housekeepers, and it truly opened my eyes to a whole new world! I used to be completely clueless about home maintenance and was constantly tormented by various household issues. But through this internship, I not only learned a ton of practical home care tips, more importantly, I realized a fundamental truth: many frustrating household problems can actually be prevented!

To be honest, when I first started the internship, I thought home services were just about cleaning. How complex could it be? But after getting hands-on experience, I discovered that professional home services are actually comprehensive solutions for residential living, with an incredible depth of knowledge involved! During my time learning from several experienced housekeepers, I truly entered a whole new world.

Drainage Systems

Honestly, what I encountered in the first week of my internship was shocking. That day, I accompanied my supervisor to inspect a villa, and the basement was in terrible condition - the floor was completely flooded, the walls were moldy, and much of the furniture was water-damaged. What's more heartbreaking was that the client said this problem had been plaguing them for several years, becoming especially severe during rainy seasons.

After careful investigation, we found that the issue actually stemmed from the house's drainage system. You might not imagine that leaves and debris accumulating in gutters and downspouts over time could cause such major problems! This made me realize I had never paid attention to these details at my own home, and when I checked immediately after returning, I found thick layers of leaves accumulated in the gutters.

Through this experience, I learned an extremely useful tip: it's essential to thoroughly clean your house's drainage system twice a year, in spring and fall. Particularly the gutters and downspouts - they may seem insignificant, but they're incredibly important. According to our company's statistics, up to 90% of basement water seepage problems are caused by blocked drainage systems - this statistic is truly shocking!

Now I've developed a habit of spending 15 minutes every weekend checking the drains. Honestly, it's not difficult at all - just checking for accumulated leaves and debris and cleaning them out promptly. This small habit not only prevents leakage problems but also avoids spending big money on professional repairs. Prevention is better than cure - this saying really holds true in home maintenance!

Utilities Maintenance

Speaking of maintenance, we must address utility system inspections. One experience left an especially deep impression on me! Around 9 PM one night, we received an emergency call from a client about a burst water pipe. We rushed over immediately, and were stunned by what we saw: the entire living room was flooded, with carpets and sofas completely soaked - it was a truly frightening scene.

Most regrettably, the client had no idea where the main water valve was located and could only watch helplessly as water continued to spread. By the time we found and shut off the main valve, the living room had nearly 5 centimeters of standing water. Later calculations showed furniture damage alone approached 100,000 yuan. If the client had known the main valve's location and shut it off when the leak was first discovered, the damage could have been much less.

This incident really impacted me. After returning home, I clearly marked my house's main water valve location and even took photos on my phone to ensure everyone in the family knows where it is. According to our company's data analysis, households that know their main water valve location can reduce damage by an average of 60% during water incidents - this statistic really speaks volumes.

The electrical panel location is equally important. I suggest everyone draw a simple utility layout map of their home, marking the locations of main control switches. This way, during emergencies, you can quickly find crucial locations and minimize damage. Now I conduct monthly routine checks of my home's utility systems, focusing on signs of water leaks and electrical wire aging. These regular inspections really help us detect potential problems early.

Air Quality

During my internship, I noticed an interesting phenomenon: many people are very particular about their home decoration and furniture but completely ignore invisible air quality issues. According to environmental protection agency research, indoor air pollutant concentrations are often 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels - this statistic is truly alarming!

Our company specifically developed a comprehensive indoor air quality improvement plan. First is air conditioner filter replacement, which is absolutely crucial! I was shocked the first time I saw a client's AC filter - it was covered in thick dust, practically a bacterial culture medium. Now I regularly clean or replace AC filters monthly, and this small action significantly improves indoor air quality.

Next is ventilation. Many people think opening windows for ventilation is simple, but there's actually technique involved. We recommend choosing early morning and evening hours when air quality is better for ventilation, with 15-20 minutes being sufficient each time. Noon is actually not suitable for ventilation because outdoor pollutant concentrations are often higher then.

Then there's indoor plant selection. Not all plants are suitable for indoor spaces. Our company specifically recommends plants that are effective at purifying air, such as pothos, snake plants, and monstera. These plants not only purify air but also enhance the overall room atmosphere. According to our measurements, this approach can improve indoor air quality by over 70%.

Most importantly, develop a habit of regularly checking indoor air quality. There are many simple-to-use air quality monitors available on the market now at reasonable prices, and I recommend getting one. Through regular monitoring, we can more directly understand indoor air conditions and identify and solve problems promptly.

Kitchen Maintenance

Kitchen maintenance was one of the areas that impacted me most deeply. I remember when I first started interning, seeing a sink full of dishes would overwhelm me. But after learning from my supervisor, I mastered a super useful time-saving tip: just develop the habit of immediately soaking used dishes in soapy water, making evening cleanup much easier.

This tip sounds simple, but the effect is really remarkable. Based on our practical experience, this can reduce dishwashing time by 40%. Plus, food residue won't dry on dishes, making cleaning more hygienic. I've maintained this habit at home for a long time now, and feel the overall kitchen hygiene has improved significantly.

Beyond dish cleaning, there are many kitchen details that need attention. For example, range hood cleaning is often overlooked by many households. When I once inspected a client's home, I found their range hood filter was caked with thick grease, no wonder the ventilation effect was getting worse. After we thoroughly cleaned it for the client, the difference was like night and day.

Now I regularly clean the range hood with professional cleaner, about every two weeks. When cleaning, pay special attention to crucial parts like filters and fan blades. Keeping the range hood clean not only improves ventilation but also extends its lifespan - multiple benefits from one action.

Cabinet maintenance is also crucial. Many people might not know that cabinets are actually one of the easiest places for bacteria to grow. I recommend doing a thorough cabinet cleaning weekly, especially in areas storing fresh ingredients. Use mild disinfectant for cleaning to effectively inhibit bacterial growth.

Another crucial detail is kitchen organization. Good organization habits not only keep the kitchen looking neat but also improve cooking efficiency. I now keep frequently used seasonings in easily accessible locations, while less-used items are stored up high. This not only saves space but also keeps the entire kitchen orderly.

Bathroom Maintenance

Regarding bathroom maintenance, there's really a lot to learn. During my internship, I discovered that bathrooms are actually one of the most bacteria-prone areas in the home! According to our company's data, regularly cleaned bathrooms have 85% lower bacteria levels compared to irregularly cleaned ones - this difference is truly striking.

Let's start with shower heads. Many people, like me previously, never thought about cleaning shower heads. But if shower heads aren't cleaned for long periods, they accumulate lots of scale. This scale not only affects water flow but also becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Now I soak the shower head in white vinegar every three months, with excellent results.

Bathroom ventilation is also a major issue. Moist environments are most prone to mold growth, so maintaining bathroom ventilation is especially important. Now I always open doors and windows after showering to let the bathroom dry thoroughly. If possible, installing an exhaust fan can greatly improve bathroom ventilation conditions.

Don't neglect drain cleaning. Many people might not know that drains are among the most easily clogged areas. I recommend checking drains weekly and promptly removing accumulated hair and debris. If drainage becomes slow, use professional drain cleaner - this effectively prevents clogging issues.

Then there's bathroom item placement. I've noticed many households randomly pile bathroom items, which not only looks messy but also promotes bacterial growth. Now I categorize bathroom items and dry them promptly after use, which maintains cleanliness and extends product life.

Finally, tile maintenance. Bathroom tile grout most easily harbors dirt, and if not cleaned promptly, can turn black and moldy. I now use professional tile cleaner monthly, focusing on grout lines. This maintains bathroom cleanliness and extends tile life.

Final Thoughts

These three months of internship really gave me a new perspective on home maintenance. I discovered that home maintenance isn't particularly troublesome - the key is developing good habits. Just like now I spend a little time each day doing simple maintenance work, which has gradually become a lifestyle.

Through regular maintenance and proper care, we can not only prevent many problems but also make our homes more comfortable. Most importantly, these maintenance tasks don't actually require much time or effort - once you develop the habits, they're easy to handle.

Looking back now, this internship really changed many of my perceptions about home life. It turns out a comfortable home needs not just good decoration and furniture, but also careful maintenance and upkeep. Through these simple maintenance tasks, we can make our homes more cozy and comfortable - isn't that what we all want?

Which of these suggestions do you think you could start implementing right away? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
